SRK in Rang De Basanti?

By IndiaFM News Bureau, February 21, 2006 - 22:31 IST

Remember we had reported recently that Hrithik Roshan was the first choice for Siddharth's role in Rang De Basanti? Apparently, Aamir Khan wanted Hrithik for this role. So much so that he actually went to meet Hrithik along with Rakeysh. But Hrithik was more keen to play Aamir's role.

Now here's another one. It seems that Rakeysh wanted Shah Rukh Khan for the role of Madhavan. They even had a meeting but SRK declined the role. Rakeysh Mehra was unavailable for his comments on this one.

SRK and Hrithik or not, we thought RDB rocked, anyway !

Katrina to play Jaya's role in Ramu's 'Sholay'

The glamorous Katrina Kaif as a silently suffering widow? Sounds like a contradiction in terms. But trust filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma to opt for the unexpected!
Having cast most of the other major parts in "Sholay" (Basanti is still pending), Ramu has now gone and signed the lovely Katrina to play the mutely grieving widow Radha in the remake of the 1970s blockbuster.
Jaya Bachchan had taken the part to the heights of unspoken poignancy in the original. You wonder what Katrina can do to the part!
"Not so fast," says Ramu. "I have directed Katrina in 'Sarkar'. I know what she is capable of. She is a classic beauty. I am casting her as a south Indian Brahmin, Mohan Lal's daughter-in-law. I think re-locating such a glamorous girl in a de-glamorised milieu would be interesting."
Ramu says in principle the widow's part will remain unchanged in the new version of "Sholay".
For Katrina, playing a widow so early in her career is a gamble. Asha Parekh in "Kati Patang" and Padmini Kolhapure in "Prem Rog" gave career-defining performances in spotless white.
Ram Gopal Varma's "Sholay" can rev up Katrina's career.

I would love to act with Aishwarya: Will Smith

NEW DELHI: Chicken tikka masala and Bollywood leading lady Aishwarya Rai top Will Smith's list of favourites in India. He also says he's keen to see the Taj Mahal on his first trip to India.
The American movie and music star is in India for a week to launch Sony Entertainment's new English language movie channel, Pix, and make a guest appearance on Indian Idol, India’s version of the US hit, according to a media report.
His first impressions? "Just recently I got to know the number of films Bollywood makes a year-a whopping 800. And each with its share of song, music, dance and drama," he was quoted as saying.
"I am simply enticed to be part of it," he said, adding, “I also want to explore the possibility of a collaboration between Hollywood and Bollywood”, as India's film industry is known.
But, of course, he's got preferences.
"I would do anything that Aishwarya Rai will be part of," he said. "I love her so."
And then there's the food and history. "I also want to taste the authentic chicken tikka masala," said Smith, who also plans to see the Taj Mahal.
"Ever since childhood, I've heard a lot about the culture and colours of this country," he was quoted as saying. "I will try to gather as much as possible, though I am being constantly cautioned by my wife to leave some things for our next visit together."

Lord of the Epics

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [MONDAY, JULY 04, 2005 10:56:55 AM]
Nona Walia
The Mahabharata. Hindu mythology's greatest epic might just become Bollywood's biggest ever cinematic venture. The magic of this powerful epic is currently being recreated by producer Bobby Bedi into a trilogy with a budget of Rs 300 crore.

"The trilogy will capture the battles, intrigues, spiritual complexity and cultural aesthetics of India, 4,000 years ago. This will be my big project for the next three years," says Bedi, adding that he discovered the power of the Mahabharata's storyline after reading Girish Karnad's script for Agnivarsha.

What will bring the superstar touch to the Mahabharata is the cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan (together on the screen for the first time) and Rani Mukherji.

"While Rani will play Draupadi, Shah Rukh and Aamir will play Karan and Arjun, but I can't reveal who's who. I hope to make a historic movie series in the manner of The Lord Of The Rings.

My Mahabharata will have the same imagination, special effects and creativity of Peter Jackson's trilogy.

In fact, we've asked The Lord Of The Rings' team to work with us on this project. Mani Ratnam will direct the trilogy, which will roll soon," says Bedi, the chairman of CII's entertainment committee.

Bedi plans to take India's most ancient story to Gen Now across the globe. "I want American, British, Japanese and Indian kids to watch the movie and understand the significance of the Mahabharata.

Telling this dramatic story will be a big challenge. Imagine something similar to Harry Potter and The Lord Of The Rings that's the canvas I'm thinking of. To be able to make something of that magnitude, we need space. The sets of the movie will span 18 acres in Haryana or the foothills of Punjab.

Designer JJ Valaya will work on the clothes, he'll drape all the characters remember, everybody in that era wore clothes without stitches. I've asked Sufi musician Madan Gopal to do research on the sights and sounds of that period. Besides, I have asked artist Manjit Bawa to think of the visuals, what the houses and temples of the Mahabharata period should look like," informs Bedi.

Shah Rukh Khan on television again

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan had his first brush with fame in 1988 when he faced the camera for a TV serial named ‘Fauji’. And now the King Khan is making another appearance on the small medium of entertainment.

But before you people start thinking that SRK is doing another serial, let us tell you that he will be gracing the finals of the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV tonight.

The King Khan's presence is possibly the biggest draw the show has achieved.

SRK has consented to be part of the grand finale on the special request of Zee Telefilms' head honcho Punit Goenka.

“We've just confirmed Shah Rukh Khan's presence. The entire Rang De Basanti team will be joining the finalists on stage too. We've managed to assemble quite an impressive gathering of celebrities from both the music and acting fields. And the lineup will continue to expand in the next few days,” says producer director Gajendra Singh.

The ‘Rang De Basanti’ team is expected to perform the title track from the film and finalists Debojit and Vinit are expected to join them.

Beitrag #59 - erstellt: 24. Februar 2006
I’m not as ballsy as Ram Gopal Varma, says Karan Johar

It took a while to woo Karan Johar into giving an interview, especially since he’s been preoccupied with the post production of his new magnum opus - ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna.’ But catch him we did and dived straight to the one question on everyone’s mind these days: would he ever makes a film without Shahrukh Khan?

“I would never want to go on a film set where he’s not there. Right now, I can’t think about it and I hope I don’t have to. He’s a part of me and he gives me a lot of strength, emotionally and professionally,” is his prompt reply.

Too mushy: The filmmaker is often accused by his peers for making candy-floss films. Karan shrugs it off with, “I don’t understand why every one is so keen on judging me so soon. It used to affect me earlier. But really, I make films I believe in.”

“I don’t run down people who make so-called ‘intellectual’ films. I liked ‘Lagaan’, ‘Rang de Basanti’, ‘Satya’, but I also know that I am not capable of making these kinds of films. So I choose not to even attempt them. If that makes me limited, then maybe I am. Today, my strength is emotional drama. I’ve never claimed to be an all-round filmmaker.”

Playing safe: But Ram Gopal Varma thinks filmmakers like him take a lot of risks as they churn out love stories over and over again. “I don’t agree with him at all. What’s the risk in making a family film? I think I play the safest. I’m not as ballsy as Ramu.

That’s why some of his films work and some of them don’t. But that’s not to say what I do is easy. I know that I lack courage to do a variety of films. But I am getting better. I am dealing with topics that I might have not thought of earlier,” he says.

Bolder issues: Like adultery in ‘Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna’? For the first time during the interview Karan becomes cagey, “I am not ready to divulge the story as yet. But all I can say is that I have become a bit bolder now.” Does that mean he’s stopped getting panic attacks like he did during the making of ‘Kabhie Khushi Kabhi Gham’? He laughs and says, “I still do, but I have grown up enough not to faint on the sets anymore.”

Let bygones be: We veer the topic to his friend-turned-foe, Nikhil Advani, whose film ‘Salaam-e-Ishq’ will be pitted against ‘KANK’. “I am sure Nikhil’s film will be a great one because he is good at his work. He’s been with me since ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ days and he’s been a great support. If he wanted to walk out and work with another filmmaker, I cannot hold it against him.”

So, does that mean he still misses Nikhil? “I do, I do. I know that he’s hurt me, my mother and my father but maybe in the process he was hurt too. I cannot tie anybody down. They are not my children.”

Coffee with Salman: As far as the second season of his highly popular show — ‘Koffee with Karan’ is concerned, the filmmaker says he would love to have Salman Khan as his guest. “Anybody who knows Salman will tell you that he is a sensitive and funny man. I want to show that part of him to the world. I have been requesting him, but he refuses to come on the show.”

SRK bails out Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai

Humko Tumse Pyaar Hai (starring Arjun Rampal, Bobby Deol and Ameesha Patel) released nationwide yesterday.

The producers, the Morani brothers, are heaving a sigh of relief and are understandably grateful to Shah Rukh Khan. Had it not been for Khan, the film would’ve gathered dust in the cans forever.

Problems they faced

HTPH was stalled for a year when Bunty Soorma passed away. Thereafter, Vikram Bhatt stepped in, and took eighteen months to complete the project.

Explains Morani, “It was not easy. First, we had to start looking at the entire story with Vikram’s vision. Some changes were made and the combination dates of Ameesha, Bobby and Arjun were adjusted.” All this only added to the film’s troubles.

UTV relationship

SRK went out of his way to get UTV involved with the film, which had been in the making for a few years. Says a reliable source, “SRK is very close; not only to the Moranis, but to UTV as well. His friendship with UTV stems from Chalte Chalte, which he co-produced with them.

The relationship became stronger after the award-winning Swades, in which Shah Rukh acted.” The actor took a personal interest in the film and got UTV involved with the project, requesting them to take up its distribution rights.

2007 project

Admits Mohammed Morani, “Actually, Shah Rukh came helped us in many ways. We are indeed thankful to him. SRK has always been like family to our company, Cine Udyog. There is a possibility that Cine Udyog and UTV may do a project with Shah Rukh in 2007.”

Did HTPH find buyers?

“To tell you the truth, we decided to release the film on our own in many territories, because other wise, we would have to compromise on a low price. It’s a very good story, with excellent performances, and we are very optimistic about it, so why sacrifice and compromise?

As for the international release, Manmohan Shetty has taken it up and I am very grateful to him as well. UTV is distributing only in the Mumbai territory.”

Kareena, Priyanka and Shahrukh in Pepsi ad

Actress Kareena Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra will be seen in yet another Pepsi ad. But this time Shah Rukh will share frame with these two beautiful ladies in Pepsi's next ad. The trio has just finished shooting for an ad for Pepsi in Madh Island. The ad is being positioned as Pepsi TV.

The ad seems interesting because of combination of Kareena, Priyanka and Shah Rukh, who will be appearing in Farhan Akhtar's forthcoming remake of Don. As per the sources this ad made at an estimated budget of Rs.3.5 million is done by Shah Rukh's friend Farah Khan and produced by his company Red Chillies Entertainment. auch hier poste ich es einfach nochmal

The truth behind Aishwarya – Abhishek marriage

One wonders who is behind the reports of Aishwarya Rai - Abhishek Bachchan marriage as the topic is talk of the town all over India.

Yes, Ash and Abhishek have been together for quite some time for the shooting of JP Dutta 's Umrao Jaan in Rajasthan.

Family circles of both – Ash and Abhishek – are keeping quiet over these reports and have expressed surprise and amusement.

Friends of the Bachchan family wonder if these reports have not been spread by vested interests.

In fact, they allege that Amitabh Bachchan 's younger brother Ajitabh who has been keeping a long distance from the Big B family might be behind this.

They say with authority that Bachchan or his family members haven't consulted any astrologer or shown Abhishek's horoscope to the reported Bangalore based astrologer about junior B's marriage with Ash.

These circles also allege that the reported relationships of Abhishek with Rani Mukherjee or Deepannita Sharma in the recent past have also been spread by these anti-Amitabh circles.

Ash' secretary has clarified that his boss is too busy for the next three years to spare any time to think about her marriage with any one.

And Dutta has also rubbished these rumours saying that he will never resort to such publicity for the sake of his film.

SRK's not-to-do Liste
By IndiaFM News Bureau, February 27, 2006 - 22:57 IST

Aamir claims Rs. 21 cr. for using his name

Actor Aamir Khan has served a legal notice to a prominent city newspaper, its publisher and two others seeking compensation of Rs 21 crores for using his photograph and quote, without his permission, in an advertisement to promote `Filmfare' Awards held on Friday.
Aamir Khan sent the notice through his lawyer Anand Desai on February 22 objecting to the half page advertisement for Filmfare awards that appeared in the newspaper on February 20 in which the actor's photograph was used.
The actor also objected to certain words used in the advertisement along with his photograph.
Aamir said in the notice that the photograph and the quote were used without his permission. Neither prior consent was obtained from him to use them nor had he communicated about it to anyone.
The actor said publication of the photograph and the quote purported to invade his rights and was in violation of law.
Aamir also demanded that the respondents tender an apology prominently in the newspaper within a week and refrain from publishing his photograph in order to promote or endorse any event or product in any manner other than with his written consent and also to refrain from attributing to him any words which he has not uttered or communicated.
The notice further said Aamir Khan reserves his rights, including his right to claim further damages from the newspaper because the extent of damages caused to him due to publication of advertisement cannot be calculated in monetary terms.
The other respondents are the event managers of Filmfare Awards.

SRK, Rani and Ash in a comic book

After winning the hearts of millions, SRK, Rani and Ash will be charming their audience through a new medium. Namely, a comic book. Titled Bollywood, the comic is being created by Illustrated Comics, based in Singapore. The format will be similar to Amar Chitra Katha and Superman, which many have grown up reading.

The purpose was to have entertainment, Bollywood-style, through a different medium. It will be a love triangle sans the song and dance sequences. The King Khan will be seen playing a college student who has a group of Internet friends. His girlfriend is an Indian Sports star. The glamour quotient will be provided by Aishwarya Rai and Rani Mukherjee.

If you’re expecting SRK, to display any super powers, you are mistaken. The comic is typical Bollywood masala potboiler! Except that this time it’s in a comic book. Along with fans in India, the publishers also hope to target the NRI population, amongst whom Bollywood is a craze. They believe that the youth will be able to identify with the situations in the comic.

Shahrukh Khan and Amrita Arora on stage, together

The Zee Cine Awards promise to be one star studded affair. As was reported earlier, Shahrukh Khan will be performing on stage. And giving him company on stage will be Amrita Arora. And this being the first time that Amrita will perform with the King Khan, she just can’t control her excitement.

The performance will be a tribute to Yash Raj Films. Rani, Priyanka, Preity, Dia and Amrita will all be a part of the medley. Each of them will perform two songs with SRK. Khan himself will be performing on all the songs. Apart from this tribute, Amrita will also perform with Riteish and Tusshar on a medley of love songs. Her outfits for the grand event have been designed by Anna Singh.

Performing with SRK sure must be a heady feeling. But the only thing that will dampen her spirits a wee bit is the fact that her boyfriend Usman Afzal, will be in Nagpur, commenting on the England-India cricket match. The awards function will be hosted by Mallika Sherawat and Karan Johar. Other celebrity presenters include Arjun Rampal and Gulshan Grover.

Aamir Khan 'beats' Shah Rukh Khan in the US
05th Mar 2006 10.24 IST
By Agencies

Shah Rukh Khan may be referred to as the King Khan, but in the US it is an Aamir Khan starrer that has acquired cult status.

While SRK starrers Devdas , Veer Zaara and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham fared extremely well in the US, it is the Aamir starrer Rang De Basanti , despite its unconventional theme and treatment, has been embraced whole-heartedly by the US audience acquiring cult status.

After the fifth week, 'Rang De Basanti' has grossed a staggering USD 2 million in the US (USD 2,008,301 to be more precise and still running), beating Kal Ho Na Ho (USD 1,956,478), Main Hoon Na (USD 1,722,450) and Swades (USD 1,223,240) hollow.

In the UK, in less than four weeks, 'Rang De Basanti' had surpassed films such as Bewafaa , Black , Parineeta , Bunty Aur Babli , Garam Masala and Barsaat , that were among the biggest hits of the UK last year.

'Rang De Basanti's latest figure is an enormous GBP 760,000 and the trade is pegging it to close at around GBP 800,000. These figures are even higher than Aamir's own The Rising and Lagaan .

Shah Rukh Khan to sing?

Actors turning songsters is a thing of the past now. Aamir, Abhishek, and Sanjay Dutt...they're all doing it. Now it's Shah Rukh Khan's turn.

The buzz is that he's going to render a song for Ritesh Sidhwani's 'Don', releasing later this year. Incidentally, SRK had rendered a track in Mansoor Khan's 'Josh' as well.

Shah Rukh Khan is the 'papa the great' for his children in real life. He might be busy neck deep with loads of shootings, but he takes time out to drop off his kids to school at 9am everyday, whenever he is in Mumbai. And if he comes back home before their bedtime, he spends time putting them to sleep.

FOR ACTORS, MONEY ATTRACTS MONEY

The Indian film industry is certainly very big, where stars earn tens of millions and the producers and the directors also roll in money. But for the actors, money attracts money. And therefore apart from acting, they get to endorse the products and in turn earn big money.

Shah Rukh khan is known as the King Khan of Bollywood. He endorses a lot of products like Pepsi, Lux, Videocon. But now, his portfolio will also have Compaq. Recently, Shah Rukh Khan launched a new laptop from Compaq Presari - the brand from Hewlett Packard. Wearing a black Compaq jacket Shah Rukh also checked out the new laptop. "I like computers. It's the first time that I am endorsing a computer brand. I am very computer savvy, so this is certainly up my ally," said Shah Rukh Khan.

We quizzed him more, to find out how important it is for him to know computers or what is the importance of computers? " I think for our country computer is very important now. It's a necessity. Every kid in India should know, how to operate and dig out information from a computer. If I were to give advice, then I would advice everyone to be computer savvy. I also think of it as a very good gift to buy," said the super star.

We asked him, when was the first time he laid his hands on a computer? "My school introduced computers long time back, when I was in 7th or 8th standard. It was DOS based then. When I came from Delhi, computer was among the few things that I got with me in this city. But I can't call myself an expert, as the technology keeps changing and there's so much to learn. Its like acting, you keep on learning something new everyday. Its just amazing as to how much you have to evolve to be an expert".

So can we easily say that this don is computer literate and as advanced? "Well, I am abreast with the new technologies that keep coming. I know the difference between a PC and a laptop or a notebook. I would say I use my laptop more than I use my telephone. So yes, I am quite savvy and I am making my kids computer savvy as well. I think it's very important for kids today to learn the computer as they are both the future".

A question away from computers now. There's a retrospective of Shah Rukh Khan going on in South Africa. Why aren't you going? "Yes I know about this retrospective. I also know that South African people really love me. I love that country and I would have loved to go there but unfortunately I am shooting for my films. I have FarhanAkhtar's 'Don' to shoot for and also Karan Johar's 'Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna'. So I am missing out on a lovely opportunity to interact with my South African fans".

This Bollywood super star will now also have some computer geeks as his fans, with the new endorsement. It is said the Shah Rukh Khan charges between 50 to 70 millions per endorsement.

Shahrukh’s favorite computer game

So you are a die-hard fan of the king Khan Shahrukh? Do you eat, sleep and breathe SRK? Do you know the brand of soap he uses but does not actually endorse? Do you know his shoe size as well as his shoe polish brand? Well, we bet you that this is something that you probably might not know. Off course we all know that he is quite techno savvy but did you mere mortals know that Shahrukh is a fanatic gamer as well. Yes, and that's not all. He has a gaming console at his place where he loves to relax and play his heart out after a hard day's work.

According to him, he prefers to buy his games from abroad as they release earlier than in India. And what kind of games does he prefer? Mostly strategy games especially the Age of Empires. And what about sport based games since he is an avid sports fan as well and used to play football for his school? Pat comes the reply that he loves FIFA.

We're sure with sure an enthusiastic techno freak around his kids will not be really far behind.

Exclusive info on RGV's SRK project

That Ramgopal Varma has signed Shah Rukh Khan for his forthcoming venture, is well-known by now. But not many are aware of its genre. Quite expectedly, both RGV and SRK are tightlipped about the project in question, not wanting to reveal much at this stage. But it’s learnt that it’ll be a time travel film, a la TIME MACHINE. “Not the entire story, but a part of it will be on those lines,” RGV informs me.

The film-maker is gung ho about the project. “We were toying with the idea of working with one another for quite some time. And this script acted as the catalyst,” RGV reveals. The project, not titled yet, is expected to take off in August this year.

Meanwhile, RGV is thrilled with the success of RANG DE BASANTI. “The success of the film, not just in India but also in Overseas, indicates that moviegoers have done away with the formula-ridden films. The film will also encourage film-makers to try their hand at varied subjects,” he enthuses.

No Bollywood without songs & dances: Shah Rukh

Bollywood leading man Shah Rukh Khan tells a film magazine that song-and-dance
numbers are unique to Indian cinema and should not be dropped to appeal to international audiences. Critics often complain that songs, which pop up as dream sequences in most Indian movies, need to be curtailed since audiences overseas find them irrelevant to the plot.

However, Khan told Filmfare magazine in an interview published in its March issue that while movies should be shorter than the average three-hour length, the song-dance routines must stay.

''Films are an important aspect of entertainment in India,'' said Khan. ''We should retain the songs and dances - that's our USP (unique selling point).''

He said he was aware that many poked fun at Bollywood movies and thought they were nonsensical and melodramatic because of ''people jumping, dancing and singing.'' But Khan pointed out that Hollywood movies had their share of absurdity.

''Look at 'King Kong' - a huge monkey falls in love with a girl - how weird can you get?'' said Khan. He conceded that Indian filmmakers should work on tighter scripts and shorter films. ''We do need to work on some aspects. I think our films are too long.''

Khan has acted in more than 50 movies including blockbusters such as ''Main Hoon Na'' (I'm Here), ''Veer-Zaara,'' ''Kal Ho Naa Ho'' (Tomorrow May Never Come), ''Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham'' (Sometimes Happiness, Sometimes Sorrow) and ''Devdas.''

Yash Chopra to remake Kabhie Kabhie

Shah Rukh Khan may don Amitabh's cap, while Akshay Kumar might stand in for Shashi Kapoor.
This is the season of remakes. While young filmmakers are busy remaking classics, Yash Chopra is planning to remake his own ’70s block-buster Kabhie Kabhie. Originally made with Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor and Rakhee, the new version is likely to have Shah Rukh Khan playing Amitabh and Akshay Kumar playing Shashi Kapoor. If the project falls into place, Yash Chopra will be working with Akshay Kumar for the first time.

“Yashji has been planning to remake Kabhie Kabhie with stars of today's generation for some time,” says an industry insider. “Of course, it won't be a frame-to-frame remake of the earlier film. The subject may be similar but the treatment and approach will be far more contemporary.”

Apparently when Yash Chopra mentioned the idea of the remake to his favorite hero, Shah Rukh Khan, the actor was pretty excited. Currently he is acting in another Bachchan remake, Don, but obviously Amitabh's role in Kabhie Kabhie is a dream role for any actor. “Shah Rukh was his first choice for Amitabh's role. He thought of casting Akshay Kumar for the second role because of his current box-office status. Shah Rukh and Akshay have never worked together, so it's a new combination which may just turn out well,” he adds. Allegedly Yash Chopra has already sent feelers to Akshay Kumar. Currently the actor is away in Cape Town and he will meet Chopra once he is back from his outdoor shoot. Yashraj Films had also approached Rani Mukherji for Rakhee's role. Apparently Rani doesn't have dates available, so now they are considering Preity Zinta.

Shah Rukh was a Bengali dancer in previous life?

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is a reincarnation of a Bengali dancer, according to a re-birth theory expert.

San Francisco-based Dr. Walter Semkiw is a regression therapist who has been studying re-birth and re-incarnation by matching behavioral patterns of several famous personalities with those from the past. He asserts that famous personalities become popular in their next lives too.

Semkiw is presently in the Indian capital to release his book ‘Born Again’ at the 2nd International Congress on Regression Theory. The book traces past lives of as many as 36 famous personalities.

In Semkiw’s assertion, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was the Bengali dancer Sadhona Bose in his previous life.

And guess what, he asserts that Amitabh Bachchan in his past life was the British stage actor Edwin Booth.

In his study, Semkiw compares personality traits, life histories, experiences and behavioral patterns of two personalities.

Other celebrities Semkiw has covered in his study include Hollywood’s Halle Berry and Oprah Winfrey.

Of course, the expert does not have any conclusive evidence to prove his claims.

Wonder what SRK and Mr. Bachchan have to say about Semkiw’s theories.

Shah Rukh - Akshay - Preity?

Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta are likely to come together in Yash Chopra's remake of his erstwhile 'Kabhi Kabhi'. Interestingly, Akshay is being wooed by Yash Chopra ages after he made a fleeting appearance opposite Madhuri Dixit in 'Dil To Pagal Hai'. Akshay's next film carrying strong commercial reports is 'Humko Deewana Kar Gaye', releasing on April 14th, and shot entirely in the US and Canada.

Should escapism escape from Bollywood?

Bollywood is going places these days. Every other day there are media reports about some Bollywood film being screened at a particular film fest in some corner of the world or some Bollywood star being invited as guest for some really classy and happening event in some part of Europe or USA. This is definitely a good thing, something that will make every Indian feel proud of. It is true that Bollywood always had a niche market globally but one might be taken by surprise how Bollywood took such a big leap all of a sudden.

Let's take a look at some of the reasons that explain this:

Here's repeating a statement that you must've heard millions of times, 'The world has become a global village today'. The internet has broken down all the barriers of distance and time. Also, credit goes to the media that has made the world a very small place. People today are becoming more aware about every possible event happening in every corner of the world, due to the media. This has led to the change in the mindset of masses in general. People in India especially are becoming more open and acceptable about various issues that were considered taboo earlier.

All this issues obviously had an effect on the Indian film industry. As the audiences are getting greater media exposure, many ideas that we were ignorant about earlier considering them as irrelevant, are now being taken up seriously. Also, there is a new breed of film makers coming up who are experimenting with new concepts. They want to try out something different and fascinating, giving a new definition to Bollywood. Besides, Bollywood films are gaining recognition and appreciation in many parts of the world. This has been a great morale booster for the Indian film makers to make interesting cinema. Also, film makers from the world are also interested in making films on India these days. This to some extent also has to do with the rise of India on the global front.

Today, Bollywood is loaded with films made on a lot of intellectually stimulating subjects. Every other film claims that it will give you a new insight of life. Subjects based on adulteries, violence and all the abstract thoughts are made into films. It is a very interesting turn that our cinema has taken with film makers strongly using cinema as a medium of expression.

But, in spite of all this positive change, there seems to be something missing in today's Bollywood flicks. Somewhere you feel that the magic that helped create some great movies in the past is missing. The magic factor that was in Sholay, or Hum Aapke Hai Kaun or in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

Let's analyze what this magic factor actually is. The core feature of every film is the story. Every film maker is basically performing the art of storytelling through his movies. There are multiple types of stories that appeal to different emotions. Now, if we look back carefully, we notice that somewhere Bollywood films were generally based on the fairy tale kind of plot where a group of good people (HERO and his group) get stuck in certain difficult situations. The films also have some bad people (Villain and group) who are responsible for putting good people into trouble. They make them go through immense hardships but at the end of the film, they come out safely. The bad people get kicked by the Hero and the good people live their lives happily ever after, just like in a fairy tale.

One might think what is so exciting about it? Well, that's the punch of it. Every typical Bollywood masala film, like a fairy tale, has a happy ending. Most of the Hindi films till around 1998-99 were based on this basic plot. Of course there were exceptions and many other kind of stories based on real life were also dealt by some film makers. Film makers like Satyajit Ray, Raj Kapoor, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Shyam Benegal, Basu Chatterjee and many others made some brilliant masterpieces based on the socio-economic conditions of India and its effect on common man's life. Their films didn't really fall in the Filmi category yet they were so alive and impactful on the audiences.

Geht unten weiter!!!!!

But from the records, it can be seen that the movies which stood out and ran successfully were the Filmi Films of Bollywood. The films in which the Hero is one of the nicest person on earth, who will always fight against wrong and evil. This Hero will fall in love with the most beautiful woman on earth. The two celebrate their love with melodious songs and hop dances around the trees, giving a beautiful romantic touch to the film. The Hero has the most motherly mother ever who always stands by her son, so we also get a bit of drama. Whenever the 'Villain and gang' strikes, the Hero successfully kicks them away with awesome action stunts. Finally, everything gets settled in the end with all the evil getting washed out, lost relatives meeting up and all the misunderstandings getting cleared and the doors open to happy life ever after.

Some might argue that this is not a definition of Bollywood, that it would be a very stereotypical way to define Hindi movies. True, Bollywood is not just about masala films, but looking at the past, it can safely be said that 'most' of the Hindi films that made History somewhere revolved around the similar plot. And we have to agree that somewhere in our heart we all love to see movies like this. No matter how clichéd, how stupid they might seem at times, but we always love to see a boy and a girl falling in love and singing songs with outfits and backgrounds changing, we enjoy hating the villain throughout the film, we have fun watching the villain's a** getting kicked by our Hero. Besides, one thing that is unique about our Hindi films is that they at some level are about fantasy. Nothing is impossible in these films. You can end up achieving everything that you ever wanted to have in your life. All your wishes come true in a matter of two and a half hours. Yes, this is escapist cinema, which takes us into a whole new world. That world is unreal but then what's the harm? Life is anyways tough for all of us and sometimes it doesn't feel worth to pay and watch some realistic film. A film that is so close to the harsh reality that it ends up adding to your miseries and increasing the amount of headache you had even before watching that film.

This explains why in spite of having all the best technology in the world, we haven't seen a film that has made the masses go crazy since Kaho Na Pyaar Hai (2000) or why any film of recent times hasn't been able to recreate the magic of DDLJ or why people of all generations still go back to Sholay and why no matter how stupid they may seem, David Dhawan's films still manage to do great business.

It is a fact that in a country like India, the typical Filmi masala movies do well even today mainly because 70% of the movie-going population here is rural. The rural people find it difficult to digest the complex urban issues on which the movies these days are based on. Rather they would go back and enjoy the regular Hindi phillum which packs up everything and comes out as a complete entertainer. But it is ironic that these kind of movies also do well in urban areas. No wonder Shah Rukh Khan still remains the undisputed Badshah of Bollywood. The fact is that, no matter where, people enjoy movies that has all the masala and five songs based on different emotions, movies with happy endings, movies that brings our dreams come true and movies in which the actors do all those things that we ever wanted to do our lives.

This does not mean that realism is bad. Of course not! It is a fascinating genre of movies. Besides, film makers in Bollywood making films of different genres, which is a good thing. But our concern is that Bollywood shouldn't lose its identity of being slightly Filmi. In the name of maturity of Indian cinema, let's not westernize Hindi films. In fact one of the surveys done lately showed that audiences of Hollywood movies are getting bugged from the extreme realistic and graphic nature of movies made there. We believe that films are about fantasy and entertainment; they are about stories that end up giving us the feeling of being lived someone else's life for a while that made us feel happy and satisfied. No matter how criticized these days, the masala films successfully doing that. The audiences walk out of the theaters with a smile on their faces, having danced, having sung, having laughed and cried, having fought with the bad people and having successful in every aspect of life.

So, hope that our film makers remain successful in keeping this magic of our Hindi films alive. No issues with the experiments that are happening these days but then don't kill the idea of having at least five songs in a film. Let some impossible things happen as reality in our films and let the films have a dramatic yet happy ending. This masala quality about our Bollywood films has made it famous worldwide and it is definitely unique quality.
